What Is Pu-erh Tea Today?

 

Known as "black tea" in the Far East of the world, Pu-erh tea originates from the Chinese province of Yunnan and is named after the market town where it was first developed. Pu-erh tea is post-fermented. This means that after the tea leaves are dried and rounded, they undergo a microbial fermentation process that darkens the leaves and changes their flavor. This process not only allows the tea to improve with age, like a fine wine, but also keeps many Pu'er teas fresh for up to 50 years. Pu'er tea can be found in pressed stone or loose-leaf form and can be made from green tea and black tea leaves.

How tea is made?

Pu-erh tea is made from the larger leafy stems of the Camellia sinensis called daiye, an ancient tree with mature leaves that is said to be 500 to 1000 years old. These trees are commonly grown in temperate regions and can be harvested year-round, although the appropriate time to harvest is in mid-spring. Various conditions and environmental factors can affect the flavor profile of Pu'er, creating a rich experience for the tea drinker with its smooth, fruity, peaty, grassy, musky, earthy, and bold flavors.
